There was a little boy, such a good
little boy;
And they sent him off to war, but it
wasn’t far, and
it wasn’t fair.
The senseless, bloody battles were being
fought right there—
Precisely in his neighborhood.
He was such a little boy, a good little
boy;
By five, a veteran of war; the suburbs
were far; at seven
he did not dare
Not join the gang, the other boys and
girls who were fighting there—
His sisters and brothers in the ‘hood.
He was such a little boy, such a good
little boy;
The blind, they see only so far—expensive
toys, fancy cars—so few inside
seem to truly care enough
To join the boy—now a grown-up man—who
even now is fighting there…
To try and resurrect his neighborhood.
